Figuring out an art style
Been going back and forth what kind of art style I want and I think I found one.
As I’ve been ideating through the game, which I’m thinking of the name 정 (Jeong) — a word that has no English translation, but I wrote about it here — I’ve been thinking about what kind of kind of art style would really help convey this concept, since that will also dictate how I go about developing the game.
For a bit of background, 정 is not really love, but a deep emotional bond one develops over time to people, places, and things. It is something that cannot be explained, but needs to be experienced.
And I think a game that can capture and convey this concept that is fundamental to Korean culture would be beautiful.
So, when I started, I sort of rushed into an art style — pixel art — since Stardew Valley is renowned for having that cozy aesthetic I think I was going for.
However, when thinking through it more, there are so many subtleties that I want to convey that I think pixel art wouldn’t be the right way. At least in my mind right now.
Also, since I want the game to be more narrative-driven, I think a different style can help provide this deep feeling of connection and coziness I’m looking for.
So, I was stuck for a bit trying to figure out what I wanted the game to sort of look like.
But then I discovered Messenger.

It is this hand-drawn, cel-shaded 3D aesthetic that is set in some kind of small Asian town. Through simple light and shadows, it conveys a calmness that I absolutely love. It’s a simple web-based game. But it is visually striking and I love how it looks.
I can imagine using similar techniques to drive a narrative and make cozy spaces depending upon the lighting, the areas, things around, etc. It seems like a blank canvas that would align really well with 정.
Anyways, this is just me detailing things I like and I am sure with my newness to art and my own restrictions in abilities, the art will come out in its own unique ways.
I think now that I have an art direction, and have been writing the story arc, things will start to come together slowly but surely.
