We're heading to New York today and talking about their bread and butter: bagels and cream cheese.

So, if you get to the front and don't know what you want or you're slow to order, it's not great. After today, you'll be able to chat about bagels and order confidently.

Usually when ordering you rarely say: "Give me an everything bagel". The "bagel" is implied. So, you would say:

"Yeah, give me an everything, two sesame, one egg, and a salt."
"에브리띵 (베이글) 하나, 참깨 (베이글) 두개, 계란 (베이글) 하나, 그리고 소금 (베이글) 하나 주세요."

What did we just order? We ordered:

• 1 everything bagel
• 2 sesame bagels
• 1 egg bagel (yes, they are a thing and they are delicious)
• 1 salt bagel (yes, these are also a thing, also delicious)

그럼, 베이글샵 직원은 이렇게 물어보겠죠:

The next question they might ask is:

"What do you want on 'em?"
"(베이글에) 뭐 올려드릴까요?"

This is asking if you want cream cheese or something else. We'll stick to ordering a bagel with cream cheese and lox (although they probably have it as a menu item since it is so popular).

So, to their question you'll respond with:

"Yeah, give me a schmear of lox spread on the everything, plain on the sesame's, and nothing on the egg and salt."
"에브리띵 (베이글) 위에 훈제연어 스프레드, 참깨 (베이글) 위에 플레인 (크림치즈) 바르고, 계란 (베이글) 하고 소금 (베이글) 은 토핑 없이 주세요."

A schmear is technically a Yiddish word, not quite English. Yiddish is a language that was (and still is to some degree) used by Jews in Central and Eastern Europe before the Holocaust. It's a combination of German, Hebrew, and Aramaic. When in Poland, the Jews were restricted from baking bread directly, but were allowed to boil it first and then bake it. So, that is what they did! Boiling it in the water, which usually has a malt in it, is what gives bagels their shiny textures!

When Jews immigrated to the US, they brought the bagel with them and started to open up bagel shops in New York, where it became a steadfast presence in the city ever since.

So, when you ask for a "schmear" of cream cheese, asking for a schmear is also correct since it has roots in Yiddish from the Jews who immigrated!
