Things to obsess over
Currently I’m drinking an, what has been described to me, expensive, highly-sophisticated, green tea.
It is a gift from my wife’s sister’s mother-in-law, who is apparently quite the tea connoisseur.
Honestly, it’s a fantastic tea and I’ll keep drinking it.
It made me think, though, that it seems like there are hobbies or obsessions nearly everyone has and they are all different.
For instance, I’ve recently dived head-first into the world of coffee, buying an espresso machine and grinder that should be suitable for the remainder of my life. And in the process, I’ve learned about grind sizes, extraction temperatures and pressures, E61 portafilters, heat exchangers, double boilers, pressure profiling, dialing in espresso depending upon the weather — the list just keeps going.
I love it. It hasn’t taken over my life and, frankly, I only do enough to make a cup of coffee I enjoy, but it has become a therapeutic morning ritual making a coffee for my wife and I. Steaming the milk. Maybe tweaking the recipe to see if it tastes a little sweeter.
But there is clearly depth to this, understandably so. Depth that as I try new things, I get to peer into the world of obsession and maybe I can decide which world I want to be enveloped by.
Which world of obsession and new quirks would I like to dive into?
How deep should I go until my curiosity is satiated and I come up for air?
I’ve been bitten by the game development bug and reintroduced that side of things to my life and am eager to keep going.
I wonder what today or tomorrow will bring to me that would allow me to peer behind the curtain of an unknown world?
