When is the right time to start a project?
For me, probably a couple weeks ago.
Sometimes I find myself wanting to make something or work on something, but the conditions must be right for me to do so.
Right now, I have had this game idea in my head for a few months, but it is rather intimidating to get started. At home, I still am getting setup with a desk, chair, etc. in my office.
And working just on my macbook seems really difficult for developing a game, but I realize I am just making excuses and just need to do the damn thing.
So, I’ll start tackling it — starting from basic principles and seeing if the core mechanics of what I make are actually fun to play.
In a similar vein, I’ve started to play games again, just casual games that are relaxing to play. It’s the first time in about 10 years as I’ve had a kind of shift of how I think about games.
I used to think that if I am putting that much mental energy towards a game, I should put it towards something more productive. But I realize that the appreciation of the story, artwork, music, etc. is something I’ve appreciated in other mediums and questioned why I don’t appreciate it in an interactive form like games.
So, I’ve started to reintroduce casual games into my life here and there in lieu of a movie or show.
Been playing A Short Hike and just started Baba Is You. I want to find and try out more narrative-driven calm-paced games to see what is out there and perhaps gain a better understanding of mechanics I’d like for my own game.
Might try Stardew Valley as I’ve been reading that it is an incredibly cozy game with a ton of depth, and also made by a solo developer.
